What Function Does Emotional or Verbal Abuse Play in Abuse?

Emotional or verbal abuse is using words and actions to tell her who she is and that she is not good enough. For example: name-calling and put-downs, constant criticism, mind-games, giving her the silent treatment, doing things to humiliate or embarrass her, guilt-trips, spreading rumours or telling secrets she has shared, insulting her race, beliefs or things that are important to her.
